Between Music - Aquasonic

Here's a compilation I made of the experimental/ambient Danish group, Between Music; gathering together tracks they released on their YouTube channel into an album of some sort.

1. On The Surface
2. Under The Surface
3. Concurrently
4. Homage To Water
5. Breaking The Surface
6. Bones Of Bruised Houses

"Five performers submerge themselves in glass water tanks to play custom-made instruments and sing entirely underwater. Transformed inside these darkly glittering, aquatic chambers, they produce compositions that are both eerily melodic and powerfully resonant. AquaSonic is the culmination of years of research into the exciting possibilities of submerged musical performance, breaking barriers and challenging existing paradigms. The artists conducted countless experiments in collaboration with deep-sea divers, instrument makers and scientists to develop entirely new, highly specialized subaqueous instruments. These include an underwater organ or hydraulophone, crystallophone, rotacorda, percussion and violin. The team also perfected a distinctive vocal technique for underwater singing. The result is a concert experience completely out of the ordinary; a deep dive into a magical new universe of images and sounds. After 10 years of work, AquaSonic had it’s world premiere in the Netherlands in 2016. It is now a viral phenomenon and the concert is requested all over the world."

The result is sonically and visually mind-blowing, see for yourself:

Also included is Laila Skovmand's track "Bones of Bruised Houses", see the very Lynch-esque video clip above.

Nirvana - Spank Thru / Sliver (Rarities 1988-1990)

Nirvana recorded plenty of material during all of their career, and a hell lot of it ended up on various compilations, single B-sides and EPs. In an attempt to gather together all their officialy released stray tracks from their different line-ups, I compiled several albums that could work as companion discs that fill the gaps between their three official LPs. Here are the first two, that round up the Chad Channing years (from 1988 to 1990).

SPANK THRU

01. Aero Zeppelin
02. Spank Thru
03. Mexican Seafood
04. Big Cheese
05. If You Must
06. Downer
07. Love Buzz (Single Mix) (Robbie Van Leeuwen) [Shocking Blue cover]
08. Hairspray Queen
09. Beeswax
10. Pen Cap Chew
11. Big Long Now
12. Blandest [Hidden Track]

I called this one Spank Thru, as it is, according to Cobain, the "very first Nirvana song". It gathers all the Bleach-era outtakes and Nirvana's earliest studio recordings. I used the Love Buzz single cover, being the first official Nirvana artwork, and working quite well aesthetically with the music.

"Aero Zeppelin", "Mexican Seafood", "If You Must", "Downer", "Hairspray Queen", "Beeswax" and "Pen Cap Chew" are all taken from the very first Nirvana recording session. Recorded on January 23rd, 1988 and featuring drummer Dale Crover (who first played as bass player in the embryonic Nirvana project Fecal Matter, and then became The Melvins' drummer) along with Cobain on guitar and Novoselic on bass.

Almost all of the session was officialy released on various albums: "Aero Zeppelin", "Mexican Seafood", "Downer", "Hairspray Queen" and "Beeswax" were released on Incesticide in 1992. Two other were released in 1989 on the Bleach LP ("Floyd The Barber" and "Paper Cuts"), and out of the three remaining three tracks ("Pen Cap Chew", "If You Must" and "Spank Thru"), two ended up on the archival project With The Lights Out while the last one ("Spank Thru") still remains unreleased to this day.

The version of "Spank Thru" featured here was recorded during the Bleach sessions, along with the outtakes "Big Cheese", "Blandest" and "Love Buzz" (presented here in its original 7-inch single mix, that features a short extract of Cobain's "Montage of Heck" sound collage at the beginning).
"Spank Thru" was released on the SubPop compilation SubPop 200 in December 1988 and "Big Cheese" was released as the B-Side to the "Love Buzz" single in November 1988 in lieu of "Blandest" which was first considered (the only existing version of this song being a cassette copy of the acetate, as the multitracks for the song were recorded over -in this case to record the new version of "Spank Thru"). "Big Long Now" was pulled off of Bleach at the last minute by Cobain, only to be released four years later on Incesticide. All these songs feature new drummer Chad Channing.

SLIVER

01. Dive
02. Sliver
03. Stain
04. Been A Son
05. Here She Comes Now (Lou Reed/John Cale/Sterling Morrison)
06. Pay To Play (Sub Pop Version)
07. Token Eastern Song
08. In Bloom (Sub Pop Version)
09. Do You Love Me? (Bob Ezrin/Paul Stanley/Kim Fowley)

The Jury sessions:

10. Down In The Dark (Mark Lanegan)
11. Where Did You Sleep Last Night? (Leadbelly)
12. They Hung Him On A Cross (Leadbelly)
13. Ain't It A Shame (Leadbelly)

I based this one on the first side of the Incesticide LP, and just filled it up with the remaining tracks from the various 1989/1990 sessions. It bridges nicely the Bleach era to Nevermind and rounds up Chad Channing's last contributions for Nirvana.

"Do You Love Me?", a Kiss cover, was recorded during spring 1989 as the band was comissioned to record a song for the Kiss tribute album Hard To Believe: A Kiss Covers Compilation. Nothing but a funny noise rock attempt, it helps knowing the band was "tanked up on red wine" and only listened once to a recording of the original song on their way to the studio session...

"Been A Son"/"Stain" were released on the Blew EP in December 1989. They were recorded, along with the track "Token Eastern Song" in September 1989, that last one remaining unreleased until its inclusion in With The Lights Out.

"Dive", "Pay To Play" (an early version of "Stay Away"), "In Bloom" and "Here She Comes Now" were recorded in April 1990 in an attempt to record a second album for the Sub Pop label.
"Dive" was released as the B-Side to "Sliver" (recorded in July 1990 with drummer Dan Peters) while "Here She Comes Now", a Velvet Underground cover, was released on Heaven & Hell: A Tribute to The Velvet Underground in 1990. "Pay To Play" was released on DGC Rarities Vol.1 in 1994 and "In Bloom" on the VHS Sub Pop Video Network, Program 1 in 1991. These last two were re-recorded with Dave Grohl for the Nevermind LP.

The Jury Sessions:

In August 1989, Cobain and Novoselic teamed up with The Screaming Trees' Mark Lanegan (vocals) and Mark Pickerel (drums), "trying to create a modern day version of Cream or Led Zeppelin". Cobain and Lanegan both brought cassettes of their favourite Leadbelly songs to practice and "branch out from there". A finished album never materialised (Ain't THAT a shame?) but some songs ended up being released on Mark Lanegan's first solo album The Winding Sheet: "Where Did You Sleep Last Night?" and "Down In The Dark" (which was recorded later (January 1990) and only features Cobain on backing vocals with Lanegan's band) while the other two -featuring Cobain on lead vocals, appeared on Nirvana's With The Lights Out.

Addendum: Another rare curio from the time that I chose not to include, is Cobain's contribution to the october 1990 sessions for the Extra Capsular Extraction EP, from Sub Pop drone doom band Earth; providing backing vocal and lead vocals on "Divine and Bright":

Fleetwood Mac - Oh, Well

12. Uganda Woman (Nigel Watson)
13. Jewel-Eyed Judy (Danny Kirwan/Mick Fleetwood/John McVie)
14. The Purple Dancer (Danny Kirwan)
15. World In Harmony (Danny Kirwan/Peter Green)

Bonus tracks:

16. [Hidden Jams Track, 1969]
17. No Way Out (Peter Green/Nigel Watson)
18. The Purple Dancer (BBC Session) (Danny Kirwan)
19. Oh, Well - Part I (Live 1969) (Peter Green)

"Man Of The World" (April 1969), "Oh, Well - Part I & II" (summer 1969) and "The Green Manalishi"/"World In Harmony" (May 1970), were the last three singles Fleetwood Mac released with Peter Green's involvement.

About "The Green Manalishi": The song was written during Green's final months with the band, at a time when he was struggling with LSD and had withdrawn from other members of the band. While there are several theories about the meaning of the title "Green Manalishi", Green has always maintained that the song is about money, as represented by the devil. Green has explained that he wrote the song after experiencing a drug-induced dream in which he was visited by a green dog which barked at him. He understood that the dog represented money.

"It scared me because I knew the dog had been dead a long time. It was a stray and I was looking after it. But I was dead and had to fight to get back into my body, which I eventually did. When I woke up, the room was really black and I found myself writing the song."

Also included are Peter Green's first two solo singles: "Heavy Heart"/"No Way Out" (1971) and "Beasts Of Burden"/"Uganda Woman" (1972) which show Green's explorations into free rock (with his first solo album The End Of The Game) and African Folk fusion. The four tracks where written and recorded with the help of Nigel Watson.

Most of the other tracks showcase young (19 at the time) Danny Kirwan's talent for songwriting; with "Earl Gray" (and its acoustic demo "Farewell"), "Jewel-Eyed Judy" or Kiln House outtake "Love It Seems" all from 1970. The blues-driven "Like It This Way", also written by Kirwan, was played extensively during the band's 1969 tour, and is presented here in a studio version recorded in 1969.

Finally, the great "Dragonfly"/"The Purple Dancer" single from 1971, recorded after the release of the Kiln House LP, clearly is, as stated by Peter Green: "The best thing he [Danny Kirwan] ever wrote... that should have been a hit."

George Harrison - Cockamamie Business

(front cover by NothingBrightAboutIt from the Steve Hoffman forum)

My goal here was really to gather all the stray 80's tracks together, in a more cohesive and musical way than just having them in chronological order... I took a sort of Brainwashed approach, having a mishmash of older and newer tracks, but all of them being pretty similar sound-wise (well to my ears anyway). It goes a bit into early 90's territory, but the album still fits pretty well between Cloud Nine (1987) / The Travelling Wilburys material (1988-1990) and Live In Japan (1992).
I left most of the Somewhere In England outtakes for a different project.

01. Cockamamie Business
02. The Hottest Gong In Town
03. I Don't Wanna Do It (Bob Dylan)
04. This Guitar (Can't Keep From Crying) [Platinum Weird] w. Dave Stewart
05. Let It Be Me (Gilbert Bécaud/Mann Curtis)
06. Poor Little Girl
07. Shanghai Surprise w. Vicki Brown
08. Zig-Zag (Harrison/Jeff Lynne)
09. Ride Rajbun w. Dhani Harrison & Ravi Shankar
10. Tears of The World (1992 Remix)
11. Cheer Down (Harrison/Tom Petty)

Bonus tracks:

12. That's The Way It Goes (1987 Jeff Lynne Remix)
13. Save The World (Greenpeace 1985 Re-take/Remix)
14. I Don't Wanna Do It (Single Mix)
15. Everybody's Trying To Be My Baby (Live) w. Carl Perkins
16. Blue Suede Shoes (Live) w. Carl Perkins
17. While My Guitar Gently Weeps (Live at The Prince's Trust) w. Eric Clapton & Ringo Starr
18. Here Comes The Sun (Live at The Prince's Trust) w. Eric Clapton & Ringo Starr

"Tears of The World" was recorded during the Somewhere In England LP sessions in April 1980. It was remixed in a very Jeff Lynne-ish kind of way in 1992 for the release of the Songs By George Harrison Vol.2 EP. It features Jim Keltner on drums and Willie Weeks on bass guitar.

The bonus track, "Save The World" is a remix of  the 1981 track from Somewhere In England with a new vocal recording and new lyrics, and was released on Greenpeace - The Album on June, 4th 1985.

"I Don't Wanna Do It" was recorded in LA in 1984 with producer Dave Edmunds for the soundtrack of the film Porky's Revenge! It was released in March (US) and June (UK) 1985 (following its single release in April, backed with Edmunds' "Queen of the Hop" -the single version is also included here). The song was written by Bob Dylan in 1968 and given to Harrison, who demoed the song in 1970 when it was considered for inclusion on All Things Must Pass.

"Let It Be Me" is a cover of the french song "Je t'appartiens" by Gilbert Bécaud. The recording date is unknown but seems to have been recorded between 1983 and 1985 (compare the vocals with the 85 retake of "Save The World"...)

The two bonus songs "Everybody's Trying My Baby" & "Blue Suede Shoes" are taken from Carl Perkins' album Blue Suede Shoes: A Rockabilly Session.
Recorded on October 21st, 1985, at Limehouse Studios, London, they feature Carl Perkins, Eric Clapton (electric guitar) and Ringo Starr (drums).

"The Hottest Gong In Town", "Shanghai Surprise" and "Zig-Zag" were recorded in July 1986 for the soundtrack of the film Shanghai Surprise (co-produced by Harrison's HandMade Films & MGM and featuring Sean Penn & Madonna). The three tracks were produced by Jeff Lynne. The film also included "Someplace Else" and "Breath Away from Heaven" which were released on the Cloud Nine LP. "Zig-Zag" first appeared as the B-Side to "When We Was Fab" in 1988 along with a Jeff Lynne's remixed version of "That's The Way It Goes" (from Gone Troppo), also included here.

About "Hottest Gong": Harrison wrote the track after being told on the film set, in Hong Kong, that two 1937-era songs were required before the shooting schedule moved on to a UK studio, in a matter of days. A pastiche in the style of Cab Calloway, the jazz-influenced composition plays on the slang term for opium – "gong". The musical backing is credited to "the Zig-Zaggers", a reference to the fictional Zig Zag nightclub, where he performs the song in an early scene in the film. The recording features Harrison on banjo and singing in the jazz scat style he had used on earlier songs such as "The Answer's at the End" and "Not Guilty", and a piano part that recalls the playing of Jelly Roll Morton. Although a soundtrack album was scheduled, it was cancelled after the film's poor critical reception. In 1987, Harrison also cited the "rotten" experience of working with Hollywood actors Madonna and Sean Penn as one of the reasons, and described Shanghai Surprise as the only film that HandMade had not enjoyed making.

Bonus tracks "While My Guitar Gently Weeps" & "Here Comes The Sun" are taken from The Prince's Trust Concert 1987 album and was recorded on June 5th, 1987 in Wembley Arena. It features: Eric Clapton & Jeff Lynne (electric guitar), Ringo Starr & Phil Collins (drums), Elton John & Jools Holland (keyboards) and Mark King (percussions). It was the first time Harrison played live since his 1974 US Tour.

"Ride Rajbun" was released in 1992 on the multi-artist charity album The Bunbury Tails, which was the soundtrack to the British animated television series of the same name. Harrison co-wrote the song's lyrics with Bunbury Tails' creator David English. The eponymous Rajbun was a character in the series, one of a team of cricket-playing rabbits – in this case, from Bangalore in India.
The song was recorded in March 1988. Harrison's nine-year-old son Dhani and David English accompanied him on the recording, as fellow vocalists, and Indian musician and composer Ravi Shankar provided the opening sitar part (Alap). According to English, Harrison visited Shankar at the London hotel where the sitarist was staying and taped Shankar's intro in his hotel room. Harrison otherwise played all the sitar parts on the song. As with Harrison's appearance on "Friar Park", a track on Shankar's album Tana Mana (1987), "Ride Rajbun" marked a rare collaboration between the two musicians in the years since their joint North American tour at the end of 1974. The song appeared in the Bunbury Tails episode "Rajbun Story", and on the soundtrack album alongside contributions from Elton John, the Bee Gees and Eric Clapton. Issued briefly in only the UK, "Ride Rajbun" remains one of Harrison's rarest releases.

"Cockamamie Business" and "Poor Little Girl" were recorded in July 1989 at Friar Park for the Best of Dark Horse: 1976-1989 LP. Also included is Harrison's contribution to the soundtrack for the film Lethal Weapon 2 with "Cheer Down" (later released as a single in August 1989). The three tracks feature Jeff Lynne on bass guitar, keyboards and backing vocals, and Ian Paice (from Deep Purple) on drums.

"This Guitar (Can't Keep From Crying)" is a remake of the 1975 song, recorded with Dave Stewart (former Eurythmics guitarist) in London in 1992. Overdubs were added after Harrison's death in 2006, with Ringo Starr on drums, Dhani Harrison on acoustic guitar and Kara DioGuardi on backing vocals. It was used to promote Stewart's Platinum Weird project, but only released on the internet. In the end the song did not appaer on Platinum Weird's album, Make Believe.

I also created a bonus Collaborations EP, that features the most notable featurings Harrison did between 1989 and 2001:

01. Gary Moore - That Kind Of Woman (1990)
02. Eric Clapton - Run So Far (1989)
03. Jim Capaldi - Love's Got A Hold On Me (1997)
04. Carl Perkins - Distance Makes No Difference With Love (1996)
05. Eric Clapton - That Kind Of Woman (1990)
06. George Harrison & Jools Holland - Horse To The Water  (2001 + 2007 mixes)

All tracks written by George Harrison except track 4 written by Carl Perkins.
